Geordie Failings

Watched the Newcastle v QPR match today, which was a turgid and lethargic affair. Viewing it was like wading through treacle.

Newcastle have generally played well this year, and could even creep into the European places if they continue the way they're going. It is, however, quite remarkable how little they have won throughout the years. I believe they did manage an Intertoto Cup in 2006, but there is more prestige and kudos attached to winning the annual gurning competition at the Egremont Crab Fair. (This, incidentally, was a competition that Peter Beardsley won seven years in a row). Beyond that, their last trophy was when Methuselah's grandfather was still in nappies.

The fireservice recently phoned Alan Pardew at his home to tell him that there was a fire at St. James' Park.
"The cups, man! Save the cups!", Pardew cried.
"Oh, don't worry", said the fireman, "the fire hasn't reached the canteen."

Yes indeed, it has been an extremely long and barren spell (or should I say era?). Money of course, like many other clubs, is the main issue. And they don't really have any. This is one of the reasons Mike Ashley has fucked around with the stadium name, in a weak attempt to pull some money in. But it's hardly a long-term solution, is it?

In contrast to the crushingly dull Newcastle game, the match between Swansea and Arsenal was an absolute cracker. End-to-end, free-flowing football and - as a Spurs fan - the right result at the end. Having said that, I have to concede, Van Persie's goal was a fantastic finish. There is no doubt that he is one hell of a player at the top of his form.

Another decent day, capping-off a good weekend. Always easy to mess it up (not unknown for me), but the way things are heading, this month is looking nice and profitable.
